We offer an all day Montessori Curriculum at Grey Lynn Montessori and our routines start with children being welcomed into our childcare centre and being able to freely choose from various curriculum areas. All our materials are displayed on low shelves that are easily accessible for children, empowering them to follow their innate interests. Children can engage in activities independently, 1-1 with childcare teachers, with a peer or in small groups within an uninterrupted block of time. This supports and strengthens their ability to concentrate, make their own discoveries and master skills at their own pace.

Our first room is set up purposefully as an induction to Montessori preschool for children aged 2 to 3 years, allowing children to learn the principles of Montessori and be well prepared for engaging in our Montessori curriculum. The second room is for children aged 3 to 6 years, this room is a fully equipped Montessori environment, led by experienced Montessori teachers.

In our transition to Montessori classroom, our children learn basic Montessori concepts such as learning to look after our belongings and packing things away once they are finished exploring so that it is ready for the next person to use. The materials and resources in this space are carefully selected and presented to meet the developmental stage of the children in the room, where they are able to freely explore materials with the support and guidance of attentive teachers.

In our Waiheke classroom, we have a well-set-up Montessori environment that is specifically prepared to support the learning of our older children. Children start in this space once they are less likely to need toileting support, sleep time and are more independent. This means that our two Montessori-trained teachers can spend regular dedicated 1:1 time with each child to extend their learning across the full curriculum offered. Children are presented with scientifically designed materials and resources that extend their learning through hands-on exploration of abstract concepts and foster a deep love of learning that helps prepare children for lifelong learning

We also offer a wide variety of extra-curricular preschool activities such as baking, science, yoga, music and movement, dance, drama, poetry, ball games, gardening, and visual arts and crafts, both 1-1 and in small groups.

We provide freshly made morning and afternoon tea for children each day. We believe that through nourishing food, children are fueled to thrive physically and mentally, whilst enjoying the benefits of coming together and connecting as a group at mealtimes.

Here at our childcare in Grey Lynn, we adhere to the Montessori Philosophy.  Various curriculum areas of a Montessori environment include Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics and Culture.

Our Montessori Curriculum:
  • Is child-focused and encourages self-reliance, develops children’s sense of self-worth and identity
  • Aims to create independent learners for the future; by building children’s confidence and self-esteem, equipping them with the necessary skills for all social and educational experiences in life.
  • Acknowledges children’s strengths and interests, and enables children to maintain focus and develop their concentration through working with activities of their choice, as well as instilling intrinsic motivation for a love of learning.
  • Provides opportunities for children’s skills and knowledge to be extended, according to their individual needs and abilities.
  • Recognises the importance of the intimate relationships required between the home and the daycare centre environments.
  • A harmonious integration of active and exploratory play into the overall curriculum where kinaesthetic learning is truly valued.
  • Seeks to further children’s knowledge of their own and other cultures in New Zealand, recognising beauty in diversity.

The staff are Devine and my child absolutely loves the centre. The cleanliness / order / and structure around their environment is a credit to the centre. Staff are so welcoming and truly have a heart for the children beyond the service they provide.
