“All that we ourselves are has been made by the child, by the child we were in the first two years of our lives.“
– Maria Montessori –
We offer an all day Montessori Curriculum, our routines start with children being welcomed into our centre and being able to freely choose from various curriculum areas. All our materials are displayed on low shelves that are easily accessible for children, empowering them to follow their innate interests. Children can engage in activities independently, 1-1 with teachers, with a peer or in small groups within an uninterrupted block of time. This supports and strengthens their ability to concentrate, make their own discoveries and master skills at their own pace.
Our teachers throughout the day offer small group sessions, where children are taught grace and courtesy lessons which help them to understand and work collaboratively together in their community. We also offer a wide variety of extra-curricular activities such as baking, science, yoga, music and movement, dance, drama, poetry, ball games, gardening and visual arts and crafts, both 1-1 and in small groups.
The outdoor programme provides a fine balance of experiences in Montessori activities, gross motor activities and gardening.
A wide variety of Montessori materials and activities displayed on the shelves on the deck are readily available for children who prefer to work on the deck.
A variety of equipment is available for children to focus on their physical education and practice their gross motor skills. A few examples of these include balancing beams, mini trampoline, moon hoppers, basketball and football nets, obstacle courses, sandpit and water trough, and group games facilitated by teachers.
A garden with seasonal plants and flowers is always inviting and children love to help with watering as well as tend to the compost bin.
Harmonious integration of Indoor/Outdoor flow
Little Engines advocates the freedom of accessibility between indoor and outdoor spaces throughout the day following children’s interests.
Events and Possible Opportunities for Parent Involvement
We have an open-door policy which enables the community and you to actively contribute to the success of our pre-school programme. Your input and involvement are of paramount importance to us and will be greatly appreciated.
In addition, you are welcome to be part of:
Excursions, parent information evenings, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Grandparents day celebrations, concerts, family picnics and festive cultural celebrations.
Portfolios & Storypark
We use an awesome app called Storypark, which allows whānau to follow their child’s early learning journey and to ensure you don’t miss out on important centre communications.
Photos, videos and audio capture your child’s learning so you never miss a treasured moment again. You and your family can also feel more engaged in your child’s development, and you decide who you would like to invite to experience your childs learning journey with you. A perfect way to share those special moments with loved ones down the line or overseas.
Although we love to use Storypark as an online platform to communicate with parents, we also use paper portfolios for each child.
Children enjoy finding their paper portfolio and reflecting on their past activities at the centre. It is a fantastic way for children to engage in self-recognition and reflect on their personal development, as well as being a treasured keepsake for their 21st Birthday!
